Mechanisms of flame spread and burnout in large enclosure fires

چکیده

Knowledge of the first principles defining fire behaviour in large enclosures remains limited despite their common use modern tall buildings. The evolution a can be defined by relationship between flame front and burnout velocities (VS/VBO). This classified into three distinct spread modes being Mode 1 (VS/VBO ? ?), 2 > 1), 3 ? 1). mechanisms governing are investigated using four full-scale enclosure experiments with high porosity wood cribs similar geometries. Flame positions estimated video data. Velocities affected heat feedback from smoke layer to fuel. velocity shows two regimes, minimum external flux above which there is surface (q?s,min?) that defines onset very rapid (q?rs,crit?). A phenomenological model developed help identify underlying controlling transition different modes. Both data show for cribs, dependence radiation weak, whereas strong. 1) occurs increasing fluxes q?s,min?. ?) further once q?rs,crit? attained due sudden increase changing ventilation condition, or significant increases enclosure.

The Spread of Forest Fires

We create a simple discrete probabilistic model for spread of a forest fire. We examine the conditions for which the fire will either die out or spread indefinitely, identifying and bounding a critical value for the probability of transmission of the fire to an immediately adjacent location. PREREQUISITES: Summation of geometric series, elementary probability, intuitive limits; for the Appendix...

A New Approach to Ventilation Measurements in Enclosure Fires

The application of Stereoscopic Particle Image Velocimetry (SPIV) is a new approach to quantifying the ventilation in enclosure fires. Stereoscopic PIV is a non-intrusive optical measurement technique which measures the displacement of tracer particles in a flow. The technique is completely independent of temperature and differential pressure measurements typically applied to quantify ventilati...

Field Modelling of Non-Charring Flame Spread

The paper describes a methodology for the field modelling of non-charring flame spread over representative solid surfaces. Coupled descriptions of the controlling mechanisms of buoyancydriven flow, combustion, soot production, radiation heat transfer and solid pyrolysis are incorporated into a fire-specific CFD code. The approach is evaluated at sub-model level and in a room corner fire configu...
